Reask (Irish: Riasc) is a ruined early Monastic site. Although nothing remains of the buildings but low walls and a cross-slab standing stone which sits in the middle of the compound, this site gives a very good idea of the layout of a small monastery of the Early Medieval period.

Excavations by the late Tom Fanning in the 1970s revealed the ruins of an oratory, several clocháns (stone huts), some conjoined, a graveyard and about ten decorated stone slabs, of which one is a particularly fine example. This pillar measures 1.64 metres in height and is 0.6 metres wide by 0.26 metres thick and is decorated with an encircled Greek cross from which are pendant spiral designs terminating in a pelta. The stone was decorated in Early Christian times (c. 7th century). The letters 'DNE' - D(omi)ne - O Lord, are set sideways to the cross.

Gallarus Oratory

The Gallarus Oratory (Irish: Séipéilín Ghallarais, literally "The Church of the Place of the Foreigners") is believed to be an early Christian church located on the Dingle Peninsula. Though the building is believed to have been built between the 6th century and 9th century, some believe it could have been built as late as the 12th century because the east window has a rounded top made of two carved stones (not a true arch). According to local legend, if a person climbs out of the oratory via the window, their soul will be cleansed.

We can stop off at this site during the Murieoch ride.

This Early Christian and Medieval site is spread over a large area of around 10 acres. The history of this site is associated with St Brendan, but the site is said to have been founded by St Maolcethair. At the centre of this area is a 12th century Romanesque Church pictured left, it consists of a nave and chancel. Amongst the other features here are, the Alphabet Stone, A holed Ogham Stone, Sun Dial, two bullaun stones, a large stone cross, St Brendans Oratory and numerous cross slabs.

The Esk Tower

The Esk Tower sits on the top of the hill on the other side of the harbour to Dingle town. It was built in 1847, during the Great Famine, as a way of making work for local men at a time when there was little work in the fields. It is 27 feet tall and made of solid rock, and a wooden arm on one side points to the mouth of the harbour, acting as a guide post to sailors and fishermen making their way along Dingle Bay.

Winter is here. The days are getting short and cold. We have had our share of wet and windy weather too, but the clear, crisp winter days of Dingle make up for it. We are open all year round, and weather permitting are always happy to see visitors who would like to go riding. It is quieter at this time of year though, so it is also a nice time for some of the horses to go off on their holidays and relax after a busy summer. They will take it in turns to have a couple of weeks/months off in the fields over the winter.

Rosie is a 16.1hh, registered Appaloosa mare, although you may not believe it from the picture! Born 2004 and backed at the yard in 2008, she is coming into her own as a brilliant trekking horse. She has a big stride with a lot of movement. As you can also see from the picture she loves the beach and the water.

Smokey is a 16hh sportshorse grey mare, born 1997. Always glad to go on the mountain trek, she is great for beginners and has a fair turn of speed on the canter track for experienced riders.

Ranji was born at the stables back in 2000. He is a big softie 16.2hh grey gelding. A fairly chillaxed individual he can usually be found towards the back of the pack, slightly in front of Guinness. Find the button and he can actually go pretty quick on the beach, and in a race he comes pretty close to the front. And he loves to jump.

Minstrel is our 14.2hh coloured mare, born 2003 and backed at the yard in 2008. Usually ridden by the guide, she is not your average trekking horse. This awesome little mare is a cross between a space hopper and an electric eel, and jeez is she fast.

Many of our horses are now ridden in bitless bridles, and we have come to the conclusion that they work better, and are happier, without a bit in their mouth. Whether on a forward going or steadier horse, on the beach, on the mountain or in the riding school, in competition and show-jumping, we feel our horses are more comfortable and just as responsive in the bitless bridle in comparison to with a bit. Many thanks for yet another wonerful stay; it was lovely to visit Dingle again, and to see the continuing improvements you are achieving. The horses have been kept so well this winter, despite the harsh weather; they looked and rode better than ever. It was also lovely to hear positive comments from clients about the "fabulously fit & well horses". The rides have been tweaked to give most benefit to both horse & rider.

I enjoyed tremendously the beach rides in 'bitless' bridles. The horses seem to enjoy the freedom to move without tense riders pulling strongly on the bit, and this makes it more rewarding for the riders. Well done guys!!

For me the high spot of our training sessions was being able to see horses working with the correct energy, rhythm, balance & shape, both during flat-work and over jumps... and all without a bit!!

Thanks again, and ...... Kallam, please make sure Snoopy's fence gets finished before she chews through it.

We didn't want any more ponies, but once the guy had got her out of the horse box,we knew we couldn't let her go back in again. That was in the spring 2009, and in August she became Gina's own pony, making them the happiest little couple you're ever likely to meet. Introducing Missy, the pony who fell on her feet and showed everyone what a difference can be made.

Rocky is 16.1hh, born 1989 and thinks he is the herd stallion, and who are we to tell him any different. Those of you who have seen Shrek will know what I mean, 'I'm a stallion!!'. All the mares love Rocky, but he only has eyes for Liath (and Smokey). He's the oldest guy in the herd now, so he takes it a bit easy and only does the shorter rides, but he still enjoys a hack out with his girls.

Fuchsia is our 14.3hh roan mare, born 1989 and at the yard since 1993. What she lacks in size she makes up for in stamina. Our longest standing trekking horse, and lead horse for many years, she certainly knows her own mind. There is very little point arguing with Fushia, but when she has been doing the job a lot longer than any of us who would want to. The first horse I ever rode on the beach back in 2000. She was a handfull then, and not a lot has changed. God bless Fuchsia.

Blasket is a 15.3hh bay mare, born 1996, Irish sporthorse. The perfect horse for a nervous beginner on the mountain, she is sure-footed and easy. On the beach is another story however, as she is one of the fastest and keenest, a ride for a confident strong rider who wants to know the meaning of speed.

Over the spring as we warm up for the summer season we have therefore been converting many of horses to being ridden bitless, and have so far had great results from all of them. Both the forward going and the steadier horses seem happier, on the beach, on the mountain or in the school. So why not come and try it out for yourself?

One Hour Mountain Ride - Cnoc an Chairn

Our one hour mountain trek goes up and over the hill behind the stables, giving spectacular views of Dingle, the harbour and beyond. On a clear day you can see Macgillycuddy's Reeks and Skellig Michael. This ride is suitable for beginners, the horses are surefooted and reliable. For experienced riders there are places for trots and canters and the group may be split if there are mixed abilities.

Two Hour Mountain and Beach - Dingle Beach

Our two hour ride is a good option for experienced riders who don't have time for a half or full day ride. The first hour follows the same route as the one hour on the mountain above Dingle. The second hour rides down through the town and onto the beach by the mouth of Dingle Harbour. Fungie is often spotted as we make our way along the sand towards Hussey's Folly Tower, although on the way back we may be going too fast for wildlife watching! These rides usually leave the stables at 11am, and are tide dependent. If the tide is high we have an alternative route for the second hour, which has a place to canter and fords the river at Milltown before returning to the stables. For mixed ability groups it is good to ride together for the first hour, before the experienced riders can enjoy an increase of pace for the second hour whilst those less experienced can return to the stables and recover their legs.

Our half day ride is 3 hours long and for experienced riders only. The ride leaves the stables and goes down to the stony beach at Burnham. It then follows the back roads to reach the huge sandy beach of Ventry. On the way home we cross the hills at Cathairbosine, giving great views of Ventry Harbour behind us and Dingle harbour to the front.

Start of Sept - End of an Era

Hi everyone! Well that is a summer on the blog. Got a few pics up here so far but I am still working on getting everyone on, horses and people. We have had some stunning weeks in Dingle this year, and also a few wet ones. It is raining at the moment, hard, so to Jo, Debbie and Cari who had a great week last week, please come back and bring the sun with you, and to Dierdre, Brandy and Brian from a couple of weeks ago, it did stop raining in between, honest. News from this week includes the retirement from the stables of Ivy, Heather and Jack. There were a few tears in the yard as they left on Sunday, we were sad to see them go after many years of working here at Dingle Horse Riding. There was also happiness though as they go to their new home near Cork, where they are going to be spoilt rotten by three lucky girls who know what every horse needs, pats and carrots. The best thing is they went together, a few of you who met them will remember that Ivy and Heather were inseperable. It will be interesting to see who fills their shoes in the herd, since Ivy has been the matriarch for many years, and Heather and Jack were also strong characters in the hierarchy. Photos to follow of them relaxing in their new home.

Full Day Rides - Ventry

The full day to Ventry starts out from the stables and takes us along the stony beach of Burnham at the western end of the harbour. We then follow part of the Pilgrim's Route over the hills at Cathairbosine and down to Ventry Harbour for a gallop on the beach. A stop for lunch at Paudie O Se's Pub is followed by the ride home, crossing the hills above Smerwick harbour and fording Milltown River.

Dingle Horse Riding is happy to announce we had a winner at the Royal Dublin Show this year! Elaine Waters, a guide at the stables as well as a bridle-maker, won the leatherwork category of the National Craft Competition 2009. Her hand-stitched dog harness is now on exhibition at the R.D.S. and will be travelling around the country later in the year.

2 day ride - Ventry and Murieoch

Tying together the Ventry and Murieoch rides, we start out from the stables and along the stony beach of Burnham at the western end of Dingle harbour. We then follow part of the Pilgrim's Route over the hills at Cathairbosine and down to Ventry Harbour for a gallop on the beach. A stop for lunch at Paudie O Se's Pub is followed by the afternoon's ride along the beach to Cuan, through bohareens around the western end of Ventry and then across the hills above Smerwick harbour and the Three Sisters, passing the ruined castle at Rahinnane.

The horses stay the night in our field near to Kilmalkadur, whilst guests return to Dingle.

On the second day we ride down to the beach at Murieoch, and then on to Beal Ban beach. We ride in the shadow of the Three Sisters around to Ballyferriter village, where we stop for lunch. The ride home takes us back along the beach at Murieoch, with the option to stop at An Riasc (an ancient monastic site) and the Gallarus Oratory (a 12th Century church) before we cross over the hills back to Dingle, fording the river at Milltown.

3 day post to post - Connor Pass, Castlegrogory and Inch.

Many riders combine the 3 day post to post with the Ventry, Murieoch and Dingle Beach rides to make a 6 day riding holiday, of which two nights are spent away (one in Cloghane and one in Camp village), and the other nights are in Dingle town. These rides take in the best of the scenery and beaches that the Dingle Peninsula has to offer. These rides are for experienced riders only.

The Connor Pass Ride is the first day of the 3 'away' days during the post to post riding holiday.The ride leaves the stables in the morning and follows the Pilgrim's Route across the mountains to the east of Brandon Peek, finishing for the night in the village of Cloghane wear guests stay in O'Connor's Guesthouse. In good weather the views from the Connor Pass are impressive to say the least. The terrain is challenging, at the highest point we cross the pass at 400m, but the horses are sure-footed, and don't worry I won't make you take it in turns to open the numerous gates, that's my job!

The second day sets out from Cloghane, following the road as far as the beach at Fermoyle. This is the ride that covers the most distance, with many miles of unbroken beach to Castlegregory, where we stop for lunch at Ned Natterjacks, followed by more beach riding in the afternoon as we make our way to Camp, where riders will spend the night at Finglas House, with their evening meal provided at Ashe's Bar.

The third day leaves Camp village and follows the bog road through Glen na Geaillt, the Valley of the Mad, coming down onto the famous beach at Inch. After lunch at Sammy's on the beach we continue along the high road with magnificent views across Dingle Bay. This ride finishes in Annascaul from where the horses return to Dingle by horse box.

Dingle Horse Riding is happy to announce the marriage on 6th June 2009 of Michelle Leahy and Liam Long. Many of you will know Michelle as your guide from the post to post riding holiday. The day was a beautiful one, and so was the bride, having topped up on her tan the week before whilst on the year's first post to post. Michelle and Liam are now back from their honeymoon in Rome, and we would like to wish them all our congratulaions and best wishes for the future.

Well, the first post to post riding holiday of the year went without a hitch, apart from the Guiness versus tree branch incident on the final day. We were glad to welcome Sue and Tim for their first visit of the year as well. Thank you to them for everything, from taking Rosie on her first trip to Ventry to fixing, well..everything really. Thanks also to Tim for the photographs, which I will upload onto here soon. Other news includes the appearance of two new horses, Roxy and Monty, as well as Figaro (Michelle's horse) who will be staying with us for the summer. The busy season is in full swing here now, and with some fantastic weather in the last few weeks the riding couldn't be better.
